Renault gives birth to Twingo sport
by Alan Harten
Renault’s reputation over the last few years has, to say the least dwindled, and the introduction of the Twingo was not met with great enthusiasm, by either motoring critics, or the general public looking for a small, city orientated, hatchback.
It seems that Renault have not given up hope on the Twingo, as they launch the Renaultsport, or RS, version into the crowded hothatch market, they are clearly hoping that the new RS will catch the eye of the motoring public, when it’s more basic versions could not.
Renault has made large design changes from the more basic city car, Twingo versions, in an attempt to separate the RS, and put it firmly in the hothatch bracket.
The RS has twin exhausts, very low side skirts, and much wider wheel arches.
The engine is the Renault petrol 1.6litre, that has been tuned up for additional horsepower, to bring it up to 131bhp. The chassis has also had a makeover, to give it better handling to match the increased bhp.
According to Renault’s sales pitch, the new RS will be “an affordable high performance car”. The car is due to make its debut at the motor show in Geneva, in two months time
