Mercedes-Benz SL 63 AMG

by Peter Charalambous
Mercedes-Benz SL 63 AMG

The awesome 6.2-litre V8 engine has finally been dropped into the two-seat SL 55 to replace the outgoing 5.4-litre supercharged unit to extra ordinary acclaim.

At the same time Mercedes gave given the SL range a quick facelift with this crazy power boost cushioned with an improved equipment range as standard.

The aesthetic changes that have been made are subtle yet effective though it is still distinctively Mercedes and the SL remains the only car in its class to have a folding metal hardtop, and a 16 second drop time.

The changes to the front are the most prominent with the re-introduction of a single-bar grille that gives the SL a wider that’s reminiscent of the SL’s predecessors.

The front bumper gets black mesh grille inserts as well as additional vents fore to cools the front wheels as well as punctured side wings with ‘63′ badging, and chunky five spoke alloy’s.

These tweaks give the SL a far meaner look, and this is substantiated by the 6.2 litre engine that not only performs like one would expect from an AMG tuned engine, but also provides a scintillating noise from the quad exhausts.

The interior is fairly similar, although enhancements have been made to the instrument panel, new seats and telematics systems.

The engine itself is the real masterpiece, as is the case with all modern AMG’s and the -62 sprint is done is a brisk 4.6 seconds although AMG has extensively retuned the suspension to provide greater agility and precision on the road making it a more inviting drive as well as a much, much faster one.

So for £102,975 you get a seven speed monster, with what is arguably the best sounding exhaust tunes of any road going production car and with the AMG badges littering the bodywork, trimming and stitching there is no mistaking this car.
