Fuel prices up, Mileage down
by Alan Harten
The ever increasing costs of fuel and car insurance are forcing drivers off the road, at least according to MoneyExpert.com. Their recent study discovered that 25% of all drivers are using their vehicles less than they previously did. And the reason for this is they simply can not deal with the increased costs of running their vehicle.
The survey also claims that in excess of 75% of these motorists blamed the increases in fuel prices as the reason they were covering less miles. In addition 80% said that insurance premiums were a major factor in reducing the miles covered.
Regular unleaded now costs £1.07 per litre on average, in some areas that can mean that the actual amount they are paying has reached £1.19. This has combined with insurance that now averages £630 per annum.
With fuel accounting for the lion’s share of running expenses for drivers, these increasing costs are forcing them to consider the validity of every journey. Often waiting until they can combine several trips into one rather than just jumping in the car to run an errand as they had done previously.
The biggest overall outlay for the year is insurance, and many motorists are reducing their mileage to reduce the premium that they pay. With all kinds of impending increases in tax and fuel duties are doing nothing to increase the driver’s confidence in their motoring future.
