You think that a car sitting in the street running (locked are not) would make a much nicer target - since the robber could skip that whole starting the engine step

^actually, there's a safety precaution on these... much like that of my turbo timer (my car has to run a minute after I'm driving to allow the oil to cool and not "coke" up in the turbo oil lines)

The Emergency brake is the safety precaution, as long as it remains up, the car will run. If it is taken off (without the keys in the ignition) the car will cut off...

a/b $200 is right, I'd suggest getting the nice one's like a Viper Alarm system w/ shock sensors and an LCD remote w/remote start...

you can always research it and take a weekend to do it... for the amateur, I suggest planning a whole day for this... it may take 4-6 hours... I'd say the pro's can do it in much less, possibly 1-3hr (depending on car, and alarm features, experience, etc)

I resisted buying one until this year, and I have to say that the recent cold weather confirmed my appreciation for the remote starter! It's great to be sitting in a restaurant, and the car be toasty warm when it's zero degrees outdoors!

if you want a remote start or alarm installed, DO NOT buy a BMW... damn if I haven't had hassle trying to get it in my car... lol, I got friends who work in the business that couldn't even help me out... They were hookin' me up with all kinds of discounts, and they were like pull the car around to the install bay... I pull it up, and they're like "oh shit..." I was like what, they explained that BMW's have so many safety interlock features that it's a beast to install even just a remote start in the cars... there's like one place that can possibly do it in my state (aside from the dealers, and let's not even go there with price)...

it's a bit insane... lol

We have a remote start on our car and I love it. It is so nice when it is cold and you can start your car from inside and warm it up. We paid around two hundred dollars to have it installed.

What do you drive? If you don't mind me asking.

I have wanted it on a few cars of mine, but I only drive stick shift(when I can) and it takes a bit more to wire them up (with safety interlocks), so I've never really taken the time to put it on any of my cars.

I never thought about the problem with a stick shift! Good point.

I haven't bought a new car in a while, but do they now come with remote starters if you order them that way????

most cars (especially luxury sedans/expensive cars) have loads of options. AT/manual, paddle shift, power windows/doors, keyless entry, remote start, engine start button, chipped keys, alarm systems, HID lights, etc...

There's most likely options/packages that you can put on a car that will include (but not limited to) remote start. A car with remote start will most likely have an Automatic transmission, power windows/doors, and an alarm system. If it is a sport compact, it will most likely also include a sunroof too.

Check with the dealer or visit the manufacturer's website (they let you virtually build the car to your specs/options, and price it out for you)

Hi all,
I realize this is an old thread, but found the idea of remote starters pretty interesting. I've never seen one before..was wondering if who has one is happy with it..
